Indian Railways Brings Affordable Healthcare to Every Platform
FacebookTwitterWhatsappTelegram

It is this vision that is taking shape on the platforms and concourses of Indian railway stations across the country. Indian Railways is translating that commitment into action by bringing affordable, quality medicines within easy reach of millions of ordinary Indians who pass through its network every single day, particularly those in smaller towns and cities who have long struggled to access healthcare at reasonable prices.

Expanding access to affordable healthcare, the railway network is scaling up Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) across station premises, placing them in circulating areas and concourses for easy access. These Kendras provide quality generic approved medicines at low prices, supporting the Government of India’s mission to ensure essential medicines and healthcare products are accessible to all.

The initiative gained momentum on March 12, 2024, when 50 PMBJKs were inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. Building on its success, Indian Railways approved the expansion of 100 additional Kendras. So far, 120 PMBJKs out of the planned 150 have been opened, reflecting steady progress in expanding affordable healthcare access across the railway network.

The establishment of PMBJKs at railway stations is guided by key objectives. These include promoting access to affordable and quality medicines, enabling passengers and visitors to conveniently purchase Jan Aushadhi products, and enhancing overall health and wellness across all sections of society. The initiative also aims to generate employment opportunities and encourage entrepreneurship by creating avenues for individuals to operate these Kendras.

Recognising their importance, PMBJKs have been classified as a desirable passenger amenity. To support their operation, Railways provides fabricated outlets in circulating areas and station concourses, allowing licensees to run these Kendras on commercial terms.

Passenger health and safety remain a priority. To further support this, medical boxes with life-saving medicines are being provided at railway stations and on passenger-carrying trains. Additionally, passengers can purchase over-the-counter medicines at stations, ensuring timely access to basic healthcare needs during travel.

Through these initiatives, Indian Railways continues to transform its stations into hubs of public service, enhancing convenience, health, and welfare across its vast network. (JKNS)
