According to reports, as per news agency JKNS, the Chief Justice questioned the genuineness of law degrees held by some advocates practicing in Delhi and observed that a CBI investigation may be required to verify their credentials.

Justice Surya Kant reportedly expressed concern over the conduct and online activities of certain lawyers, particularly on social media platforms, and alleged that many individuals wearing black coats were “fraudulent” and possibly holding questionable law degrees.

The Chief Justice also remarked that the Bar Council of India (BCI) was unlikely to take action in such matters, alleging that it was “in collusion” with such elements.

During the hearing, the bench refused to entertain a lawyer’s plea seeking senior designation and observed that senior advocate status is a distinction to be conferred and not something to be pursued through repeated litigation.

“You are pursuing it. Does it look proper?” the Chief Justice observed, while also questioning whether the senior designation was being treated merely as a status symbol.

Justice Surya Kant further expressed concern over increasing attacks on institutions through social media and activism, stating that unemployed youth often turn towards online activism and criticism of the system.

The remarks came during the course of a hearing where the bench was dealing with petitions related to senior advocate designation and conduct of certain members of the legal fraternity. (JKNS)
