Srinagar, Apr 27 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday strongly criticised the detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), terming it a “gross misuse of law” and “totally unjustified.”

Taking to X, Omar as per news agency JKNS said, “He should NEVER have been detained under PSA, in fact he should never have been detained at all. His detention was a gross misuse of this law & totally unjustified.”

Omar said adding that, “I hope the people responsible for this detention learn a valuable lesson from the decision of the Hon’ble High Court & reflect on the way these laws are being abused in J&K.”

The reaction comes after the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh quashed the PSA detention of Mehraj Malik, who had been in preventive custody since September 8, 2025, over allegations of activities prejudicial to public order. Malik, who represents Doda constituency and heads the AAP’s J&K unit, had challenged his detention through a habeas corpus petition.

The court, after hearing arguments from both sides over multiple hearings, had reserved its judgment on February 23 and subsequently set aside the detention order, paving the way for his release after completion of legal formalities. (JKNS)
