Raised during the tumultuous days after Partition, the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment brought together patriots across faiths and ethnicities, united by the spirit of patriotism and the singular mission of “defence of motherland” against the Pakistani invasion. It remains the only regiment to have begun its journey as a volunteer force.

Renowned for its operational excellence in difficult terrains and expertise in counter-insurgency operations, the regiment has grown into one of the most decorated Infantry Regiments of the Indian Army. Its honours include one Param Vir Chakra, three Ashok Chakras, ten Maha Vir Chakras, thirty-four Vir Chakras, along with numerous other gallantry awards. Over the decades, the regiment has actively participated in key operations, including the 1971 and 1999 wars, earning distinguished battle honours.

The newly renovated War Memorial at the Regimental Centre now stands as a powerful symbol of the JAK LI Regiment’s resolve and unwavering commitment to the nation. It honours the valour of regimental heroes who lived by the motto “Balidanam Vir Lakshanam” (Sacrifice is a Virtue of the Brave), turning their legacy into an enduring inspiration for future generations.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister paid rich tribute to the soldiers and reaffirmed the deep-rooted bond between the soil and spirit of Jammu and Kashmir and the regiment.

“The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment embodies the spirit of resilience and patriotism that defines our people. This War Memorial is not merely stone and steel; it is a testament to the sacrifices made by brave soldiers of the Regiment. On the auspicious 78th Raising Day, we renew our commitment to JAK LI Regiment and our Armed Forces, preserving the legacy of their bravery,” he said.

The ceremony was also attended by Dr Farooq Abdullah along with senior Indian Army leadership including Lt Gen Manish Erry, Colonel of the JAK LI Regiment, and other dignitaries. The event featured wreath-laying and a ceremonial guard of honour at the War Memorial, which bears the engraved names of soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty, serving as both tribute and inspiration, and deepening respect for the regiment’s legacy of sacrifice.
