Maha Vir Chakra Awardee Col Sonam Wangchuk Passes Away

Srinagar, Apr 11 (JKNS): Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, a highly decorated Indian Army officer popularly known as the “Lion of Ladakh” for his gallantry in the Kargil War, has passed away on Friday, drawing tributes from across the country.

As per news agency JKNS, Col Wangchuk, remembered as the liberator of Turtuk during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, breathed his last, marking the end of a distinguished chapter of courage and military excellence.

He was among the rare officers in the Indian Armed Forces to be honoured twice with the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), the nation’s second-highest wartime gallantry award, in recognition of his exceptional bravery and leadership in combat.

 

His crucial role in the capture and liberation of Turtuk in Ladakh during the 1971 war remains one of the most significant achievements in India’s military history.

 

Col Wangchuk’s legacy continues to inspire generations, with his service and sacrifice widely hailed as a symbol of unwavering dedication and fearless commitment to the nation. (JKNS)
