Srinagar, Dec 19 (JKNS): Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Satish Sharma on Friday reiterated that the government will honour its commitment of providing free ration and LPG cylinders to poor and eligible households, asserting that welfare of the underprivileged remains at the core of the administration’s agenda.

Talking to reporters here, Sharma said concrete steps are being taken to ensure fair and transparent distribution of benefits. “Our resolve to support poor and deserving families is firm. The promises made regarding ration and gas cylinders will be implemented,” he said, according to news agency JKNS.

The minister said elaborate arrangements have already been put in place to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential food items during the winter season, especially in snow-bound and far-flung areas. “Adequate stocks have been pre-positioned in all winter zones to avoid shortages even if highways remain closed for extended periods,” he said.

To improve quality control, Sharma said the department has initiated the procurement process for 20 mobile food testing laboratories. “Each district will be equipped with a mobile lab to monitor food quality. Any instance of adulteration will invite strict action,” he said, referring to recent concerns over food safety.

Acknowledging financial constraints, Sharma said the government inherited multiple challenges. “Expectations have increased manifold over the years, while resources remain limited. Despite this, we are working with sincerity and fairness to ensure justice for all,” he said.

On pending ration cards and issues faced by split families, widows and other deserving groups, the minister said the matter is under active consideration. “Given J&K’s unique geography and circumstances, we have sought special concessions from the Centre. Genuine cases will be addressed,” he assured.

Sharma also said efforts are underway to streamline Departmental Promotion Committees to ensure timely absorption of posts and justice to employees. “Many employees have been waiting for years. I will personally ensure resolution in the first three districts by January,” he said, adding that merit and fairness remain key commitments of the Omar Abdullah-led government.

The minister appreciated the support of the Chief Minister and the Central government, saying sustained assistance from Delhi has been crucial. “Our Chief Minister is committed and optimistic. Continued central support will help accelerate development,” he said.

He further said coordination with the Punjab government is being strengthened to resolve inter-state food supply issues that were earlier delayed due to administrative hurdles.

Highlighting the government’s broader vision, Sharma said initiatives are also underway to revive tourism and promote sports as alternatives for youth engagement. “Activities like skiing, water sports and downhill cycling are being promoted to turn youth interest into livelihoods and counter social evils,” he said.

The minister added that the government is also focusing on solarisation of public units, development of playfields and strengthening tourism-based employment. “Our message is of peace. We will respond to terrorism with tourism. No poor family will be left hungry and our commitments will be fulfilled within the next six months,” he said. —(JKNS)
