Prime Minister lands in Gurdaspur to review disaster response and meet with affected families
GURDASPUR – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Gurdaspur, Punjab, to assess the flood situation in the state. His visit follows a review of the devastation caused by relentless monsoon rains in neighboring Himachal Pradesh. The Prime Minister was welcomed by Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and state ministers.
The visit comes after a social media post from Modi in which he stated the central government “stands shoulder to shoulder with those affected in this tragic hour.” He is scheduled to hold a review meeting with officials and is expected to meet with some of the flood-affected families.
Both Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have been hit by severe flooding in what has been described as one of the worst monsoon seasons in recent history. In Punjab, more than 40 people have lost their lives, and over 2,000 villages have been impacted, displacing more than 4 lakh people.
The situation is equally dire in Himachal Pradesh, where the death toll from rain-related incidents and road accidents has surpassed 360 so far this season. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has estimated the total loss to public and private property at over ₹4,080 crore. The extensive damage has affected critical infrastructure, including over 5,300 roads, numerous water supply schemes, and power transformers.
