MUMBAI – With the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 on home soil, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur says the team is mentally and physically ready to make history and claim their first-ever title. India has previously finished as runners-up twice, in 2005 and 2017, but has yet to lift the trophy.

Speaking after the squad announcement, Kaur, who will be captaining India in the 50-over World Cup for the first time, emphasized the significance of the tournament. “This is a home World Cup. Home World Cups are special for every player,” she said, expressing her hope to contribute with her extensive experience, particularly from the number four batting position.

A notable topic of discussion was the exclusion of explosive opener Shafali Verma from the final squad. Kaur addressed the decision, explaining that the selectors are prioritizing team stability ahead of the crucial tournament. “The team we have picked is the best, so we don’t want to play around with the team ahead of the World Cup,” she stated. While Verma is currently playing for India ‘A’ to gain experience, Kaur affirmed that she is “a part of the system” and that the team is keeping a close eye on her progress.

Kaur believes the squad is well-balanced and ready to play their “best cricket” in both the upcoming home series against Australia and the World Cup. ATP
