Baramulla Road to Kashmir University North Campus in Disrepair for Years, Patched Hastily for LG Visit

Baramulla: The road connecting Delina, Baramulla, to the North Campus of the University of Kashmir has remained in a deplorable state for nearly a decade, causing significant hardship for residents and students. Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, no substantial repairs have been undertaken since the road was first macadamized when the campus was established.

Local residents report that the road, riddled with large potholes, becomes particularly treacherous during winters, posing challenges for commuters, including students, patients, and the elderly. “No one paid attention to the road’s maintenance since its initial construction,” said a resident, highlighting the neglect.

In a sudden move, authorities sprang into action overnight, filling potholes along the road on a war footing ahead of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s visit to the North Campus on July 13, 2025. The LG is scheduled to attend an event for the interaction and distribution of appointment letters to the next of kin of victims of terrorism.

Residents, however, are skeptical of the temporary fixes. “Filling potholes for a VVIP visit only exposes the authorities’ hollow claims,” said a group of locals. They fear the makeshift repairs will wash away with the next rainfall, leaving the road in its dilapidated state. “It’s ironic that they woke up after years just for the LG’s visit. What about the daily struggles of students and residents?” they added, demanding permanent macadamization to address the issue.

The community continues to call for lasting solutions to ensure safe and reliable access to the university and surrounding areas.
