Srinagar, May 21 (JKNS): In a significant development, Jamai Market in the Nowhatta area of Srinagar, which traditionally remained closed on May 21 to mark the death anniversary of Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq, remained open on Wednesday after 35 years.

Sources told news agency JKNS, that the move comes after successful negotiations held by Srinagar Police with the local Market Association and the Awqaf Committee, they said.

“This is the result of sustained engagement and trust-building by the police with civil society stakeholders,” Police sources said. “The shopkeepers and members of the Jamai Market Association voluntarily agreed to open their shops in the spirit of normalcy and public welfare.”

The reopening of the market, seen as a symbolic shift in the narrative around the area, drew attention from both locals and security observers. Police officials termed it a “positive outcome of community policing and peaceful coordination.”

No untoward incident was reported, and the market witnessed normal footfall throughout the day. (JKNS)
