“India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby.

“Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

According to the BBC, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicentre was 16km (10 miles) north-west of the city of Sagaing, at a depth of 10km.

Strong tremors were felt hundreds of miles away in Thailand and south-west China.

Buildings have been damaged in Bangkok, and roads have buckled in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw.

The Thai government is holding an emergency meeting.

The earthquake and damage come ahead of next week’s BIMSTEC summit in the Thai capital on April 4, which will see the heads of government of the BIMSTEC nations in attendance, including PM Modi.
