Saharanpur (UP): A Pakistani spy, who was found guilty of living in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh with a pseudonym, will be deported back to his country after completing his 17-year sentence in jail, a senior police officer said here on Saturday.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Sajwan said that in 2008, Pakistani spy Shahid Iqbal Bhati was arrested by the Punjab Police from Patiala and was presently lodged in Noida Jail. “He originally hails from Kasur district of Pakistan,” he said.
He said that a local court had sentenced him after which he was sent to jail. “The Union Home Ministry was informed about the completion of his sentence and now orders of the Ministry are awaited to complete further proceedings,” he said.
The SSP said that Shahid Iqbal had changed his identity and lived in Haqiqat Nagar of Saharanpur for about one and a half year in the name of Devraj Sehgal. “He used to run a computer centre here. He had got his bank account opened and managed ration card and PAN card based on fake documents,” he said.
He said that on 6 November 2008, the Chief Manager of the main branch of State Bank of India lodged a complaint against Iqbal Bhatti alias Devraj Sehgal in Sadar Bazar police station and alleged that he had opened a bank account by preparing documents in a fake name and address.
He said that several cases were registered against him under serious sections in Janakpuri police station and Sadar Bazar police station of Saharanpur, for which the Saharanpur court had sentenced him. “As a precaution, he was kept in Noida jail instead of Saharanpur,” he said.
Saharanpur’s senior jail superintendent Satya Prakash has given information from Noida jail about the completion of Iqbal Bhatti’s sentence.
