Mandi (HP): Iterating that quantum computing will be of vital importance in the coming years, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that India is laying stress on the area.

“The future lies in quantum computing. India is also working in this direction. Till recently, we were not familiar with quantum computing. The supercomputer was the biggest thing for us in the world of computing. But you must have seen that recently, Google has introduced a quantum chip named Willow,” Rajnath Singh said at the 16th Foundation Day programme of IIT Mandi.

The minister said India has joined the category of select countries which have more than one aircraft carrier and pointed out that aircraft engines will also now be made in the country.

He said India was also making efforts to understand the impact of Artificial Intelligence, which is the latest technological development.

Addressing the programme as the chief guest, Rajnath Singh said the establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology at a historic place like Mandi symbolises the co-existence of antiquity and modernity.

He urged the students to concentrate on doing something new. It can be some reform, technological adaptation or creation of new technology. “You can move ahead and lead. So try to take new initiatives in life,” said the minister.

He said today India needs to create its own AI-driven war doctrine. For defence, there is a need to create indigenous AI chips. “Keeping cyber security in mind, there is a need to develop firewalls. I believe that IIT Mandi can play a big role in this.” UNI
