New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday predicted rainfall and snowfall over the Western Himalayan region during the next week and over the plains of northwest India, with the possibility of isolated heavy falls over Jammu & Kashmir on the 5th and 6th of January.

“Dense fog and cold day conditions are likely to continue over parts of northwest and central India during the next 24 hours, improving thereafter,” the IMD said.

According to the IMD, “Light isolated to scattered rainfall and snowfall is very likely over the Western Himalayan region from the 2nd to the 4th of January, and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall and snowfall over the region from the 5th to the 6th of January.

“Heavy rainfall and snowfall at isolated places are also likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on the 5th and 6th of January,” the IMD said.

“Light isolated to scattered rainfall is expected over the plains of northwest India from the 4th to the 6th of January. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh on the 5th and 6th of January,” the MeT added.

The weather department also forecast a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3℃ over northwest India during the next five days.

“No significant change in minimum temperatures is expected over central and eastern India during the next three days, followed by a gradual rise of 2-3℃ thereafter,” the IMD noted, adding that a fall in minimum temperatures by 2-3℃ is likely over the Maharashtra region during the next two days.

“Cold day conditions are very likely in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on the 2nd of January, and in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and west Madhya Pradesh on the same day,” the IMD said.

“Dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail during late-night and early-morning hours in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, sub-Himalayan west Bengal and Sikkim, and Odisha on the 2nd of January. Similarly, dense fog is expected in Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on the 2nd and 3rd of January, and in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from the 2nd to the 6th of January,” it added.
