Srinagar, Nov 05 (JKNS): Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has continued to lead the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for more than two decades, having assumed the party presidency in 2003 after succeeding her father and party founder, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
As per news agency JKNS, Mufti initially took over as caretaker president in April 2003 after her father became Chief Minister following the 2002 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. She subsequently became the party’s elected president the same year.
Her leadership continued through several significant political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, including the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, following which she was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for over 14 months.
Despite her prolonged detention, the PDP did not undergo a leadership transition. Following her release in October 2020, Mufti continued to lead the party and was formally re-elected as its president in February 2021 and again in October 2023.
Her continued leadership marks a tenure spanning more than two decades at the helm of the PDP, making her one of the longest-serving women presidents of a regional political party in Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
