Srinagar, Nov 03 (JKNS): National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday declined to comment on the resignation of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi from the party, saying, “I can’t say anything,” before disconnecting the phone call.
Soon after Ruhullah announced his decision to quit the National Conference and MP seat, during a public gathering in Budgam, news agency JKNS contacted Dr Farooq Abdullah to seek his reaction to the political development.
When asked by this correspondent about his party MP’s resignation and what he had to say about the development, Farooq Abdullah replied, “I can’t say anything,” before ending the call without offering further details.
The development comes amid an escalating public confrontation between the two leaders. Earlier, Farooq Abdullah had challenged Ruhullah to resign from the party if he believed the NC government was doing nothing and contest the parliamentary seat independently without the party’s support.
“Let Ruhullah resign if he thinks we are doing nothing. Let him contest the Parliament seat without the NC. Let us see whether he will win or not,” Farooq had said.
Notably, Ruhullah had subsequently announced the date of his resignation and, on Tuesday, declared his decision to quit the National Conference and resign from the Lok Sabha during the Budgam gathering, intensifying the political confrontation within the party. (JKNS)
