Srinagar, Oct 22 (JKNS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the Kashmir Marathon has emerged as a major sporting attraction, with its scenic surroundings, attractive prize money and participation of runners from across the country and abroad.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar after inaugurating the Kashmir Marathon Expo at Polo Ground, as per news agency JKNS, CM Omar said participants from different parts of India and foreign countries were expected to take part in the third edition of the marathon scheduled for Sunday.
He said the Kashmir Marathon stood out among races held across the country because of its natural beauty and surroundings, adding that the prize money was also comparatively higher.
The Chief Minister said a special prize category had been introduced for local runners this year in response to their demands, with the aim of promoting running and encouraging greater participation in both the half and full marathon events.
Omar said he had participated in the first two editions but would not run this year due to unavoidable reasons. However, he would be present to flag off the event.
He urged people to participate enthusiastically, adding that taking part in the marathon was more important than winning.
The Chief Minister also encouraged those who had not yet registered to avail themselves of the opportunity at the expo and become part of the event. (JKNS)
