During the visit, the Commissioner reviewed the existing arrangements for waste handling, transportation, segregation and processing. He emphasised the need for better coordination among the concerned wings, efficient utilisation of available machinery and timely resolution of operational issues to ensure the smooth functioning of the facility and reduce the accumulation of unprocessed waste.

The Commissioner was accompanied by the Joint Commissioner (Works), SMC; the Joint Commissioner (H&S), SMC; Solid Waste Management Officer and other officers of the Corporation.

Dr. Basharat also inspected the bio-remediation project for legacy waste and reviewed the measures being undertaken for its scientific processing. He stressed the importance of ensuring the proper functioning and timely maintenance of machinery, streamlining waste transportation and strengthening processing arrangements to reduce the burden on the landfill.

Reviewing the functioning of the Leachate Treatment Plant and the C&D Waste Processing Plant, the Commissioner emphasised the need for their effective operation and proper management. He also reviewed the handling of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and stressed the importance of systematic storage and disposal arrangements, wherever required, to maintain orderly operations at the site.

Taking note of the need to maintain hygienic conditions, the Commissioner directed the concerned officers to undertake fumigation and other appropriate measures to control odour emanating from the facility. He also stressed regular monitoring and the maintenance of cleanliness within and around the landfill site, in accordance with applicable solid waste management and environmental norms.

The inspection underscored the importance of coordinated efforts by the Corporation’s sanitation, mechanical, transport, electrical and works wings in improving waste management operations. Effective legacy waste remediation, scientific processing and proper management of associated facilities remain essential to reducing pressure on the landfill, minimising environmental risks and protecting public health.

SMC continues to focus on improving waste management operations through better coordination, efficient use of resources and environmentally responsible practices, with the aim of ensuring a cleaner and healthier Srinagar.
