Kupwara 9 October 2026(JKNS): In a major step towards strengthening road infrastructure in the border district of Kupwara, the NH-701 project connecting Rafiabad, Kupwara, Chowkibal, Tangdhar and Chamkot is progressing with the aim of improving connectivity to remote border areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Package-I, covering the 0–51 kilometre stretch at an estimated cost of ₹1,404.04 crore, includes one road overbridge, six major bridges, 18 minor bridges and two light vehicle underpasses. According to the supplied project figures, the package has achieved 45.23 per cent physical progress and 33.56 per cent financial progress, with completion targeted for May 9, 2027.

Package-II, covering the 51–113.1 kilometre stretch, was sanctioned on July 30, 2026, at a cost of ₹766.37 crore and is currently under the tendering process. In another significant development, an 8.2-kilometre Sadhana Tunnel has been proposed, with its Detailed Project Report (DPR) under preparation.

Once completed, these infrastructure initiatives are expected to improve connectivity between Kupwara and its remote border areas, facilitate smoother transportation, strengthen trade and tourism, and improve access to healthcare, education and other essential services.

For the residents of Karnah and surrounding border areas, these projects hold considerable importance, as better road connectivity can reduce travel difficulties and support socio-economic development. Timely execution and completion of the projects will remain crucial to ensuring that the benefits reach the people who depend on these routes for their daily needs.(JKNS)
