Karnah, Sept 21 (JKNS): The Civil Administration Karnah, in collaboration with the Indian Army, on Monday conducted a mega cleanliness drive in Tangdhar town, bringing together government departments, local institutions, traders, students and community representatives in a collective effort to improve sanitation and promote responsible waste management practices across the subdivision.
The initiative focused not only on cleaning public spaces but also on creating awareness about scientific waste management, segregation of waste at source and the need to prevent open dumping. The drive was attended by the Commander, 104 Infantry Brigade, SDM Karnah, Tehsildar Karnah, BDO Tangdhar/Teetwal and officers and officials from various government departments. The BDO Tangdhar served as the Nodal Officer for the campaign.
A large number of stakeholders participated in the cleanliness campaign, including members of Beopar Mandal Karnah, ex-servicemen, students, government employees, Numberdars, Chowkidars, former PRI members and other local representatives. Their participation highlighted the importance of community involvement in maintaining cleanliness and improving the overall civic environment of Tangdhar.
Door-to-Door Waste Collection Launched
A significant component of the initiative was the formal launch of a door-to-door (D2D) waste collection campaign by the Rural Development Department in Tangdhar.
Under the campaign, designated waste-collection vehicles will collect household and commercial waste directly from residents, shopkeepers and establishments. The initiative has been launched with the active cooperation of the Beopar Mandal and other local stakeholders.
The administration stressed that the success of the door-to-door collection system would depend largely on the cooperation of residents and commercial establishments and urged people to hand over their waste to the designated collection teams instead of disposing of it in public places.
Focus on Four-Stream Waste Segregation
Particular emphasis during the awareness campaign was laid on four-stream segregation of waste at source. Residents, traders and commercial establishments were sensitised about the importance of separating different categories of waste at the point where it is generated.
The administration urged households and shopkeepers to keep waste segregated and hand it over separately to the door-to-door collection vehicles. Officials explained that segregation at source would facilitate better collection, processing and disposal of waste and reduce the burden on waste-management systems.
The campaign also sought to create greater awareness among traders and the general public about maintaining cleanliness around commercial areas, residential premises and public spaces.
Administration Warns Against Open Dumping
The Civil Administration also issued a clear message against open dumping of waste, stressing that garbage should not be thrown along roadsides, in drains, water channels or other public spaces.
Shopkeepers and commercial establishments were asked to maintain suitable dustbins within and around their premises and ensure that waste is disposed of only through the designated collection mechanism.
The administration further conveyed that sanitation and waste-management norms would be enforced and that violations, including open dumping and improper disposal of waste, could invite action under applicable provisions wherever warranted.
Community Participation Essential
Officials emphasised that cleanliness cannot be sustained through periodic cleanliness drives alone. Instead, they said, long-term improvement requires regular waste collection, segregation at source, proper disposal mechanisms and active participation of the community.
The participation of students, traders, ex-servicemen, government employees, local representatives and other stakeholders during the drive was seen as an important step towards developing a sense of collective responsibility for sanitation in the border subdivision.
The administration appealed to citizens, traders and institutions to make proper waste segregation and disposal part of their daily routine and extend cooperation to the door-to-door collection campaign.
The initiative is expected to strengthen sanitation management in Tangdhar and encourage residents to adopt cleaner and more environmentally responsible practices, contributing towards a healthier and cleaner Karnah. (JKNS)
