Budgam, Aug 8 (JKNS): The District Budgam Tenni-Koit Championship 2026, organised by the District Budgam Tenni-Koit Association, commenced at the Beerwah Sports Ground on Friday.
The two-day championship, being held on August 8 and 9, has witnessed enthusiastic participation from boys and girls representing different villages and areas of Budgam district.
The championship aims to promote Tenni-Koit at the grassroots level, provide young players with a platform to showcase their talent and encourage youth to take up sports and healthy activities. The participation of players from different rural areas has added enthusiasm and competitiveness to the event.
Players from various villages displayed their skills, agility, speed, discipline and competitive spirit during the championship.
Organisers welcomed the participation of a large number of young athletes from rural areas, saying that such events play an important role in identifying and encouraging local sporting talent.
The matches witnessed healthy competition among the participants, with players giving their best to perform well in their respective events. Organisers said that sporting activities not only keep young people physically fit but also help develop confidence, discipline, teamwork and leadership qualities.
One of the participating players expressed gratitude to the District Budgam Tenni-Koit Association for providing an opportunity to compete at the district level.
“We are thankful to the association for giving us a platform to showcase our abilities. Such competitions provide us with valuable experience, increase our confidence and motivate us to improve our skills further,” the player said.
The organisers said that another important objective of the championship is to identify emerging talent from different parts of the district. They said that with regular competitions, training and proper guidance, talented young players can perform well in district, divisional and higher-level championships in the future.
Tenni-Koit, also known as Ring Tennis, is a racket-less sport played on a tennis-style court. Players throw a circular rubber ring over a net into the opponent’s court. The sport requires agility, balance, speed, concentration, hand-eye coordination and good physical fitness.
A participating player also highlighted the importance of sports in keeping youth away from drugs and other negative influences. The player said that he had chosen the path of sports after leaving drugs behind and urged young people to use their energy in positive and constructive activities.
“Sports can play a major role in keeping young people away from drugs and other negative activities. I appeal to the youth to participate in sports and make them a part of their daily lives,” the player said.
A female player participating in the championship also appealed to young people, particularly girls, to come forward and take part in sporting activities. She said that girls have ample opportunities to excel in sports and that such competitions provide them with an important platform to demonstrate their abilities.
“I appeal to all young people, especially girls, to participate in Tenni-Koit and other sports activities. It is a very good sport, and such competitions give us opportunities to learn, compete and improve our abilities,” she said.
The participation of players from different villages and rural areas was described as an important step towards strengthening sports at the grassroots level. Organisers stressed the need for more sporting activities in rural areas so that the energy of youth can be channelled in a positive direction and local talent can receive proper opportunities.
Players who perform prominently in the championship and secure different positions will be felicitated with trophies and other awards. Organisers said that recognising the achievements of young athletes encourages them to work harder and pursue higher goals in sports.
The participating players expressed hope that more Tenni-Koit competitions, coaching camps and sporting activities would be organised regularly in Budgam district, providing young athletes with greater opportunities to develop their skills and build a promising future in sports.
The District Budgam Tenni-Koit Association reiterated its commitment to promoting the sport at the grassroots level and encouraging maximum participation of both boys and girls from different areas of the district. (JKNS)
