Sopore, Aug 4 (JKNS): The 179 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Tuesday brought curtains down on the Shaheed Nisar Ahmad Lone Memorial Girls Cricket Tournament here, with SRM Welkin School Sopore clinching the title after a thrilling final at the Mazbugh Cricket Ground.
Organised under the force’s Civic Action Programme (CAP) 2026, the tournament witnessed spirited participation from eight schools across the township, underscoring the growing enthusiasm for women’s cricket in the Valley.
In a tense summit clash, SRM Welkin School defended a modest total of 88 runs, restricting Government Boys Higher Secondary School Bomai to 82 for 8 to register a narrow six-run victory.
The champions were presented with the winner’s trophy and a cash award of ₹15,000, while the runners-up received ₹11,000 along with the runner-up trophy.
Munazah Zia of SRM Welkin School was named Player of the Match for her impressive all-round effort, contributing 21 runs and claiming three wickets, and was rewarded with ₹1,500. Adhfar Wali of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Bomai bagged the Player of the Tournament honour for accumulating 96 runs and taking five wickets throughout the competition, also receiving ₹1,500.
Certificates were awarded to all participating teams in recognition of their effort and sportsmanship.
The participating institutions included Valley Public School Sopore, Sanctorum School Lalad, GMET Nowpora Kalan, MET School Sopore, Rehmat-e-Aalam Educational Trust Seloo, and Neither Field School, besides the two finalists.
Commanding Officer of 179 Battalion CRPF, V.K. Choudhary, graced the closing ceremony as Chief Guest, with Second-in-Command Mange Ram Sharma, Chief Medical Officer Shri Vipin Kumar Singh, Deputy Commandants Ajeya Kumar and Ajay Kumar attending as Guests of Honour.
Among the distinguished guests present were Principal Government Boys Higher Secondary School Bomai Abdul Qayoom Ahmad, Chairman SRM Welkin School Haji Inayatullah Hajine, Principal AGS School Mazbugh Smt. Harvinder Kour, and lecturers Ghulam Nabi Ganie and Aijaz Ahmad.
The tournament was efficiently managed by Deputy Commandant 179-BN CRPF Ajeya Kumar as Nodal Officer of the Event,Inspector Ghanshyam Meena as Programme Management & Security Arrangement officer, Khan Jahangeer as Programme Co-ordinator,Sub Inspector Atul Kumar Event Incharge,ASI Lalit Kumar Event Coordinator, and Vishal Khujuria as Programme Administrative Coordinator.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commanding Officer commended the participating teams, coaches, and organisers for their efforts. He said the tournament was part of CRPF’s ongoing civic outreach to encourage girls’ participation in sports, promote a healthy lifestyle, and strengthen community-police relations.
He congratulated the winners and lauded all players for displaying remarkable discipline, determination, and team spirit throughout the event. (JKNS)
