Srinagar, July 30: The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed serious concern over the reported situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), following claims that dozens of people were killed during recent protests and allegations of excessive use of force by Pakistani security forces.
According to reports, between 40 and 75 people have allegedly been killed during demonstrations in different parts of PoJK, including Rawalakot and Mirpur, where Pakistani security forces reportedly used live ammunition while dispersing protesters.
Reports also indicate that protests have intensified across PoJK in recent days, with restrictions imposed on movement and communication. Curfew-like measures and disruptions in internet and telecommunication services have also been reported in several areas.
Social media accounts linked to the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) accused Pakistani security forces of using lethal force against peaceful protesters. The organisation has appealed to the United Nations, international human rights organisations and democratic governments to intervene, alleging excessive use of force and live ammunition against demonstrators.
In a statement, Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the criminalisation of a civil society organisation and the imposition of strict restrictions on public gatherings in PoJK raise serious concerns over possible infringements on the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.
The UN Human Rights Office called for respect for fundamental rights and urged that any restrictions on civil liberties comply with international human rights standards.
