Residents from Hyderpora, Habba Kadal, Bulbul Bagh, the Islamia College area, Buchwara, Dalgate, Press Colony, Batamaloo, and several other localities told news agency JKNS that packs of stray dogs roam freely on roads and lanes, creating panic among pedestrians, schoolchildren, elderly citizens, and morning walkers.

Locals said that while announcements regarding sterilisation drives and control measures are frequently made, the ground situation remains largely unchanged, with stray dogs continuing to pose a threat in residential areas and public spaces.

Several residents urged the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and the Animal Husbandry Department to intensify sterilisation, vaccination, and relocation measures to prevent attacks and ensure public safety.

A resident of Hyderpora said, “Every morning and evening, we fear stepping outside because packs of stray dogs chase people, especially children.”

Another resident from Habba Kadal said, “The authorities keep assuring people that the issue will be resolved, but the stray dog population only seems to be increasing.”

A local from Buchwara remarked, “This has become a serious public safety issue. We need action on the ground, not just assurances.”

Residents of Press Colony said journalists, office-goers, and passersby frequently face harassment from stray dogs during the early morning and late evening hours.

The residents said the situation persists despite repeated assurances from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation that sterilisation and stray dog control measures would be intensified. However, they alleged that no visible improvement has been witnessed on the ground so far.

People have appealed to the administration to treat the issue as a priority and launch a comprehensive and sustained campaign to curb the growing stray dog menace across Srinagar. (JKNS)
