Srinagar, July 27 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was long overdue, while asserting that the credit for the development belongs entirely to the protesting students who remained steadfast in their demand for accountability.
Speaking to reporters at the Rabta Office in Srinagar, CM Omar, as per news agency JKNS, said the phrase “better late than never” certainly applies to the resignation, but maintained that the decision should have come much earlier as the issues had persisted for nearly a month.
The Chief Minister said no political party or leader should claim credit for the resignation.
“The entire credit goes to the students who stood firm, continued their protest and refused to back down from their principled stand,” he said.
Commenting on the reported detention of around 2,500 to 3,000 people in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah said such aggressive measures cannot eliminate militancy.
He said the detention of thousands of individuals directly affects their families, resulting in widespread alienation among the local population. “If 3,000 people are detained, it impacts nearly 15,000 family members. Such actions create alienation instead of trust,” he said.
The Chief Minister said while forceful measures may produce short-term results, lasting peace and the “last mile” victory against militancy cannot be achieved without winning the confidence of the people.
He stressed that public trust and cooperation remain essential for ensuring sustainable peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
