Srinagar, July 13 (JKNS): In recognition of his longstanding contribution towards the preservation of Kashmir’s rich cultural, literary, and religious heritage, Ravinder Pandita, Chairman of the Save Sharda Committee Kashmir (Regd.), was honoured with the Lal Ded National Literary Award at a grand literary function held at Tagore Hall, Srinagar, on Sunday.
The prestigious award was presented during the release of the book “Lal Ded – The Mother of Kashmir,” authored by noted writer Dr. Vaidehi Taman.
The ceremony, attended by eminent scholars, writers, social activists, and dignitaries from across the country, celebrated the timeless legacy of the 14th-century Kashmiri mystic poetess Lal Ded and her enduring message of spirituality, harmony, and cultural unity.
The award was presented by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who appreciated the efforts of individuals and organisations working towards the preservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural and literary heritage.
Ravinder Pandita was recognised for his continuous efforts in safeguarding the centuries-old Sharda civilisation, promoting Kashmir’s shared cultural traditions, and highlighting the importance of preserving the region’s historical and spiritual legacy. Through the Save Sharda Committee, Pandita has consistently advocated for the protection of heritage sites, promotion of the Sharda script, and revival of the region’s rich cultural identity.
Several other distinguished personalities were also honoured during the event, including Commodore (Retd.) D. S. Sodhi, veteran journalist Manzoor Dar, and other eminent contributors in the fields of literature, culture, and public service.
Speaking on the occasion, Ravinder Pandita expressed gratitude to the organisers for recognising his work and for organising an event dedicated to Lal Ded, whom he described as a symbol of Kashmir’s shared spiritual and cultural heritage.
He said Lal Ded’s teachings continue to inspire generations by promoting peace, coexistence, and humanity beyond religious and social boundaries. Pandita also stressed the need to preserve her literary contributions for future generations.
During the programme, Pandita, along with the organisers, urged the government to establish a Lal Ded Memorial Library dedicated to preserving her works, research, and contemporary literature.
They said such an institution would serve as an important centre for scholars, researchers, and students interested in Kashmir’s literary and cultural history.
The function witnessed the presence of several distinguished guests, including former Member of Parliament Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Tirath Singh Rawat, renowned Kashmiri writer Smt. Neerja Mattoo, and numerous literary personalities, intellectuals, and cultural activists.
The release of “Lal Ded – The Mother of Kashmir” was widely appreciated as an important contribution to documenting the life, philosophy, and literary legacy of one of Kashmir’s greatest spiritual icons.
Speakers at the event highlighted Lal Ded’s universal message of compassion, tolerance, and human values, describing her as a timeless symbol of Kashmir’s composite culture.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to preserve and promote Kashmir’s literary, cultural, and civilisational heritage through research, documentation, and public awareness initiatives. (JKNS)
