Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, as per news agency JKNS, Sharma said preparations for Muharram were initiated nearly two months ago, making it one of the earliest and most comprehensive planning exercises undertaken by the government.

He said a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was recently held with senior officers, legislators and stakeholders to assess preparedness and ensure all essential facilities are made available ahead of the religious occasion.

“The government has adequate stocks of essential commodities, including ration and LPG, and additional supplies have also been procured to meet any increased demand,” Sharma said.

Addressing concerns related to drinking water availability during Muharram, the minister said large Syntex water tanks are being installed at important locations, while water tankers will remain available to cater to public requirements. He added that fire service vehicles would also be deployed at key points as a precautionary measure.

Sharma acknowledged challenges related to road repairs and potholes, stating that rising bitumen prices and supply constraints due to prevailing geopolitical circumstances have impacted maintenance works.

“Despite these challenges, we are making every effort to address road-related issues and improve conditions wherever possible within the available time,” he said.

Appealing for unity and brotherhood, Sharma said divisive forces often attempt to create differences among communities, but such efforts must be collectively rejected.

“We are one people and must remain united. We believe in the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family. External and internal forces trying to divide society should not be allowed to succeed. Our collective responsibility is to strengthen unity and harmony,” he said.

Referring to the upcoming pilgrimage season, the minister said the government has also reviewed arrangements for the annual Kheer Bhawani Mela and Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.

He said he would visit the Kheer Bhawani shrine on June 18 to inspect preparations and would subsequently review arrangements at Pahalgam and Sonamarg for the yatra.

Expressing optimism about the tourism sector, Sharma said tourist arrivals in Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing a steady revival and described the trend as encouraging.

“Tourism is steadily picking up and we must collectively ensure a welcoming environment for visitors. Jammu and Kashmir has an important contribution to make to India’s growth story,” he said. (JKNS)
