Srinagar, Jun 9 (JKNS): Senior BJP leader and party’s JK Spokesman Altaf Thakur today hailed the historic breakthrough of the strategically important Zojila Tunnel, calling it a landmark achievement that reflects the PM Narendra Modi-led government’s vision of modern infrastructure, development and seamless connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, Thakur congratulated Prime Minister and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways for achieving a major milestone in one of India’s most ambitious mountain infrastructure projects.
“The breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel is a historic moment for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. It reflects the strong commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari towards transforming connectivity and accelerating development in border and mountainous regions,” Thakur said.
He said the 13.15-km tunnel would emerge as a lifeline for Ladakh by ensuring all-weather connectivity and ending decades of winter isolation caused by heavy snowfall and avalanches along the Srinagar-Leh highway.
“This engineering marvel will not only reduce travel time and improve transportation but will also boost tourism, trade, economic growth and defence logistics in the region,” he said.
Thakur said the Modi government has brought unprecedented infrastructure development to Jammu and Kashmir over the past few years, including highways, tunnels, rail connectivity and smart infrastructure projects aimed at integrating remote regions with the national growth framework.
“The Zojila Tunnel is not merely a road project. It symbolises progress, national integration and the government’s resolve to provide world-class infrastructure even in the most difficult terrains of the Himalayas,” he added.
The BJP spokesman also appreciated the efforts of engineers, workers and project teams who worked under extreme weather conditions to achieve the breakthrough beneath the challenging Zojila Pass.
“Despite harsh winters, avalanches and freezing temperatures, the dedication of engineers and workers made this milestone possible. Their contribution will always be remembered in the history of modern infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir,” Thakur said.
He expressed hope that once completed, the tunnel would open new opportunities for employment, tourism, healthcare access and economic activity in both Kashmir and Ladakh while strengthening year-round connectivity across the strategically important Himalayan corridor. (JKNS)
