SHOPIAN, MAY 20: The cotton-like seed fluff released by poplar trees during the spring season has become a major concern across several areas of District Shopian, with residents expressing frustration over the growing problem and its impact on daily life.

Locals from different villages and towns of the district said that the white fluff spreads rapidly through the air and covers roads, markets, orchards and residential areas, creating inconvenience for pedestrians, bikers and commuters. Residents said that while walking or riding motorcycles, the fluff often enters the mouth, eyes and nose, making travel difficult especially during windy weather.

People further complained that the cotton-like particles do not remain limited to outdoor areas only, but also enter inside homes through doors and windows, covering rooms, courtyards and household surroundings, causing discomfort to families.

According to locals, many people, especially children, elderly citizens and asthma patients, face breathing problems, allergies and irritation during this season. Residents believe the continuous spread of the airborne fluff is negatively affecting public health in several areas of the district.

Residents have appealed to the District Administration Shopian to take the matter seriously and issue necessary orders or preventive measures to address the growing concern. They urged the authorities to look into the issue on priority and explore effective solutions, including proper management or regulation of poplar trees in densely populated areas.

Locals said the issue returns every year and requires timely intervention to provide relief to the public and ensure a safer environment for residents across the district.
