Srinagar, May 14 (JKNS):National Institute of Fashion Technology Srinagar organized a three-day Artisan Awareness Workshop under the theme “Fasana-e-Naqsh” from May 14 to 16, 2026, at its Ompora Budgam campus. The workshop aimed to promote artisan engagement, create awareness, and preserve the rich traditional crafts and cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir through interactive sessions, live demonstrations, exhibitions, and cultural activities.

The inaugural session was attended by SDM Khanshab Jehangir Ahmad Giri as the Chief Guest. Zubair Kirmani and Arshad Mushtaq were also present on the occasion. Faculty members, students, artisans, and participants from different parts of Budgam district attended the event.

The programme commenced with the traditional “Rawait-e-Isband Soaz,” reflecting the vibrant cultural ethos and heritage of Kashmir. Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries emphasized the importance of preserving traditional crafts, empowering local artisans, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities in the handicrafts sector.

During the workshop, participating artisans were felicitated with appreciation certificates and mementos in recognition of their valuable contribution towards preserving traditional arts and craft practices in the region.

As part of the event, NIFT students set up creative stalls showcasing contemporary craft-based products and innovative design concepts inspired by traditional Kashmiri craftsmanship. The dignitaries and guests appreciated the students’ efforts in blending traditional techniques with modern design approaches.

The workshop sessions focused on creating awareness about the preservation, promotion, and sustainable development of Jammu & Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage. Participants were encouraged to explore innovative methods to strengthen traditional art forms while maintaining their originality and cultural significance.

Speakers also highlighted the importance of skill development, market awareness, institutional support, and collaboration among artisans, designers, and academicians. Discussions stressed the need to bridge the gap between traditional crafts and contemporary market trends to ensure wider recognition and sustainable economic opportunities for local artisans.

The workshop witnessed active participation from members of the artisan community, faculty, students, and invited guests, providing a meaningful platform for dialogue, collaboration, and cultural exchange in the field of crafts and heritage preservation.

The organizers reiterated National Institute of Fashion Technology’s continued commitment towards supporting the artisan ecosystem of Jammu & Kashmir and promoting the region’s unique craft traditions at national and international levels. (JKNS)
