GCOE Srinagar Holds Annual Road Races; Shaheena, Ahsan Emerge Winners

Srinagar, May 9 (JKNS): Government College of Education (IASE), M.A. Road Srinagar on Saturday organised its Annual College Road Race 2026 for men and women students, witnessing enthusiastic participation of more than 90 students in the twin events held across Srinagar.

The 5-kilometre race was flagged off at 6:30 a.m. by college principal Prof. (Dr.) Seema Naz from SKICC and concluded at Foreshore Road near Nishat Garden. The route passed through Gupkar Road and the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden stretch before culminating at Nishat.

Shaheena Shahbaz of B.Ed. 1st Semester emerged winner after maintaining an early lead throughout the race, clocking 35.5 minutes. Sabha Assad, also a B.Ed. 1st Semester student, secured the second position with a timing of 40.15 minutes, while Uzma Shafi of the ECCE department finished third in 45 minutes.

Tabinda, Haleema Bano, Kusum, Rutba, Shaheen Kounsar, Sonika and Minakashi finished fourth to tenth respectively.

The prize distribution ceremony was held at Nishat, where trophies were awarded to the top three finishers and medals to the first ten position holders by the principal and senior faculty members.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Seema Naz emphasised the importance of sports and physical fitness in shaping the overall personality of students. She urged students to actively participate in sports activities throughout the year and said such events help in promoting discipline, teamwork and a healthy competitive spirit among youth. She also highlighted the importance of women’s participation in sports, stating that sports empower women, build confidence and encourage leadership qualities among young girls.

She further stressed that active involvement in sports and extracurricular activities plays a vital role in keeping students away from drug abuse and contributes towards building a healthy and drug-free society.

Convenor College Sports Board, Dr. Mohd Yasin Pir, highlighted the importance of sports in student life and encouraged wider participation in future events being organised by the college sports board.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were Dr. Bilquees Aslam, Daljeet Kour and others.
The event was organised by the Department of Physical Education under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Yasin Pir, with support from Dr. Qazi Inaam and Dr. Daljeet Kour.

At the conclusion of the event, Prof. (Dr.) Seema Naz extended gratitude to the Health Department and Traffic Police for their cooperation and support in ensuring the smooth and successful conduct of the event.

Smililarly, The 6-kilometre race was flagged off at 6:15 a.m. by college principal Prof. (Dr.) Seema Naz from Gupkar Link Road and concluded at Foreshore Road near Nishat Garden. The route passed through Gupkar Road and the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden stretch before culminating at Nishat.

Ahsan Mukhtar Dar of UG 6th Semester emerged winner after maintaining an early lead throughout the race, clocking 25.5 minutes. Showkat, a UG 4th Semester student, secured the second position with a timing of 27.4 minutes, while Hyder, also from UG 4th Semester, finished third in 28.5 minutes.

Zakir Hussain, Abdul Rehman, Zakir Hussain Lone, M. Junaid, Imtiyaz Ahmad, Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Ashraf Bimla finished fourth to tenth respectively.
