Sopore, Apr 9: (JKNS): The horticulture department has advised farmers in Baramulla and Sopore to avoid the use of plant growth regulators during the ongoing bloom stage, warning of long term damage to fruit production.

SMS (Subject Matter Specialist officer) Baramulla/Sopore Mukhtar Ahmed Wani said that while plant growth regulators are recommended for certain fruits and vegetables under specific conditions, their use at present is not advised by the department or agricultural universities.

He said many farmers tend to use these substances during adverse weather, but stressed that such practices should be avoided unless backed by proper recommendation.

“This is a crucial period when blooms emerge. Farmers must exercise caution and avoid anything that is not officially recommended,” he said.

Wani said fruit setting largely depends on weather conditions, which play a key role during the blooming stage.

Referring to feedback from growers, he said that while some farmers believe plant growth regulators help improve fruit setting in the short term, their continued use can have negative effects on overall blooming and yield in the long run.

He said the department is monitoring the situation and reiterated the advisory for farmers to rely on natural weather conditions instead of unverified interventions. (JKNS)
