Jammu, Apr 1 (JKNS): In a notable move, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday allowed the introduction of a private member’s bill aimed at renewal of leases for existing occupants, with the ruling National Conference government opting not to oppose it.

The bill, moved by NC legislator Tanvir Sadiq, was introduced after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Revenue portfolio, stated that the government would not resist it, as per details available with news agency JKNS.

The House approved its introduction through a voice vote, marking the first such instance since the present government assumed office.

The legislation seeks to provide relief to existing leaseholders amid growing concerns over expiry of leases, particularly in key tourist areas like Gulmarg. It also attempts to address issues arising from the Jammu and Kashmir Land Grants Rules, 2022, which mandate fresh auctioning of such properties at market rates instead of renewal.

Reacting to the development, Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone criticised the move, alleging that the proposed law primarily favours the affluent class. He said the bill relates to high-value government land and questioned its benefit for economically weaker sections.

Lone further asked the government to disclose details regarding the extent of leased land and revenue earned, stressing the need for transparency while asserting that poorer sections continue to remain neglected. (JKNS)
