Srinagar, Mar 19 (JKNS): The Meteorological Department Srinagar on Thursday reported widespread rainfall and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir over the past 24 hours, forecasting continued unstable weather conditions across the region till March 20.

Director MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad as per news agency JKNS said that, most places recorded light to moderate rain and snowfall during the period.

He said Baramulla received 29.5 mm rainfall, Poonch 29 mm, Batote 25.5 mm and Pahalgam 20.6 mm, while Gulmarg recorded 23 cm of fresh snowfall.

Regarding the forecast, he said the weather will remain generally cloudy on March 19-20 with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and snow at many places, while higher reaches of Chenab Valley and South Kashmir may witness moderate to heavy snowfall.

He added that weather conditions are likely to improve from March 21 to 25 with generally dry weather, except for a brief spell at isolated places on March 23. Between March 26 and 28, partly cloudy skies with light precipitation over higher reaches are expected, followed by another spell of rain and snowfall at many places from March 29 to 31.

Advising caution, the MeT Director urged travellers and transporters to plan movement carefully, especially across higher reaches and important passes.

He also warned of possible heavy precipitation in isolated areas along with thunder, gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and chances of hailstorms.

Farmers have been advised to resume agricultural activities from March 21 onwards. (JKNS)
