Srinagar, Mar 14 (JKNS): jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said Jammu and Kashmir has the potential to become a national model in integrated fisheries development, noting that India has already emerged as the world’s second-largest fish-producing nation.

Addressing the National Coldwater Fisheries Conference at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre in Srinagar, as per news agency JKNS, LG Sinha said it was a matter of pride for the Union Territory to host such an important event. He also appreciated the Union Minister for approving a Rs 100-crore fisheries cluster in Anantnag, describing it as a reflection of the Centre’s commitment under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

The Lieutenant Governor said the fisheries sector contributes nearly 7.3 percent to the country’s agricultural GDP and exports have doubled since 2013–14. He added that just as India achieved success in the dairy sector through the White Revolution, the country now aims to become the world’s leading fish producer through innovation, improved policies and technological advancement.

Highlighting developments in Jammu and Kashmir, Sinha said trout production in the region has increased significantly—from 1,663 tonnes in 2021–22 to about 2,650 tonnes in 2024–25. He said around 27,000 hectares of water resources in the Union Territory are currently being utilised for fisheries activities.

He further said that the Holistic Agriculture Development Plan (HADP), comprising 29 interconnected projects, is expected to substantially increase the contribution of agriculture and allied sectors to the region’s economy.

The LG also pointed out several challenges faced by the fisheries sector, including climate change, increasing water temperatures, water scarcity, slow growth of native fish species and fish health risks. He stressed the need for a scientific roadmap focusing on genetic improvement of trout and carp, climate-resilient production systems, better aquatic health management and development of indigenous fish feed.

He also spoke about innovative solutions such as drone-based transport of fresh fish from high-altitude farms to reduce spoilage and improve supply chains.

Sinha highlighted key initiatives including the Trout Integrated Aqua Park at Kokernag, which will include facilities for recreation, marketing and value addition. He also referred to the National Vision 2030 plan aimed at increasing trout and mahseer production across Himalayan states, along with financial support schemes such as Kisan Credit Cards and insurance coverage for fishermen.

“By integrating fish production with cold storage, processing, packaging and branding, Jammu and Kashmir can emerge as a national model in fisheries development, generating employment opportunities and enhancing the income of fish farmers,” the Lieutenant Governor said. (JKNS)
