Srinagar, Feb 26 (JKNS): The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, on Thursday announced that Sadaqat-ul-Fitr for the year 2026 has been fixed at Rs 80 per person, urging people to discharge the obligation before Eid-ul-Fitr so that the poor may benefit in time.

According to news agency JKNS, the Grand Mufti said Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is compulsory upon every Muslim, men, women and even infants. He explained that the amount corresponds to the value of half a Sa’ of wheat, which calculates to approximately Rs 77, and has been rounded off to Rs 80 as a matter of caution.

He clarified that guardians are required to pay on behalf of their minor children, while adult children must discharge their own charity. He also stated that a husband cannot pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr on behalf of his wife without her explicit permission.

Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam further directed that the charity must be distributed strictly among the poor and deserving, including destitute persons, needy relatives, orphans and travellers within one’s locality.

He emphasised that the amount should not be diverted to mosques, shrines or any political or religious organisations, ensuring that the intended beneficiaries directly receive support.

“Sadaqat-ul-Fitr serves to purify one’s fasts and enables the underprivileged to partake in Eid festivities with dignity,” he said, appealing to the faithful to fulfil the obligation ahead of Eid prayers. (JKNS)
