Karnah, Jan 16 (JKNS): The spread of the dangerous and fatal livestock disease Black Quarter (BQ) in Karnah Sub-Division has caused serious concern among the local population.

According to residents, several valuable animals have died due to the disease in recent weeks, while the non-availability of vaccines and a severe shortage of veterinary staff have further worsened the situation.

Sources said that nearly a dozen animals have died due to Black Quarter in the Jabri Bachaldar area, while the death of two animals has also been reported from Kandi. Livestock-rearing farmers stated that these deaths have caused them heavy financial losses, as their livelihood largely depends on their animals.

Affected people said that when they approached the Veterinary Department regarding the issue, they were informed that the Black Quarter vaccine has not been available for several years.

According to local farmers, Black Quarter is a disease that can easily be prevented through timely vaccination, but due to the lack of vaccines, livestock have been left helpless against this deadly illness.

The public also alleged that there is an acute shortage of veterinary staff in Karnah Sub-Division, due to which neither timely medical assistance is available in remote areas nor effective disease monitoring is being carried out.
There are several villages where no veterinary personnel are regularly posted.

Experts warned that Black Quarter is a rapidly spreading disease, and if immediate vaccination drives, preventive measures, and awareness programmes are not launched, the disease may spread to more areas.

Local residents have appealed to the district administration and the Animal and Sheep Husbandry Department to immediately ensure the availability of the Black Quarter vaccine, address the shortage of veterinary staff in Karnah Sub-Division, and organise emergency vaccination camps in affected and vulnerable areas.

The public said that if timely action is not taken, it will not only cause irreparable damage to the rural economy of this border area but will also erode public trust in government departments. (JKNS)
