Srinagar, Jan 9 (JKNS): All samples of eggs collected from different localities of Srinagar and sent for laboratory analysis have been found to conform to prescribed quality standards, officials said on Friday.

An official told news agency JKNS that the samples were tested as per the guidelines laid down by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and were declared fit for human consumption.

Clarifying circulating reports, the official said that the Eaggoz brand is not available in the Kashmir Valley, adding that during the inspection drive, authorities lifted both loose eggs and packaged eggs available in Srinagar markets for testing.

He said the sampling and testing exercise was part of routine food safety surveillance aimed at protecting public health and ensuring compliance with quality norms, adding that such inspection drives will continue in the future.

A senior officer from the Food Safety Department told JKNS that all egg samples lifted from Srinagar were found to be of standard quality. He said that eight (8) samples of different egg varieties, including both loose and packaged eggs, were tested and all met prescribed safety standards.

The officer reiterated that the brand which was at the centre of earlier speculation is not being supplied or sold in Kashmir, and therefore had no connection with the samples collected locally.

He further urged social media users, influencers and the general public to verify facts from official and credible sources before uploading or sharing any information online, warning that unverified reports can create unnecessary panic.

It may be recalled that last year, in December 2025, the Food Safety Department had initiated testing of organic and regular eggs across Kashmir following viral claims on social media alleging the presence of banned chemicals in eggs of a particular brand.

The controversy had surfaced after a YouTube video, claiming to be based on independent laboratory tests, alleged traces of nitrofuran and nitroimidazole residues substances prohibited for use in food-producing animals due to their toxic and carcinogenic effects.

During that time, National Conference MLA from Zadibal Srinagar, Tanvir Sadiq had raised concerns on social media and urged the Health Minister and the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs to order widespread testing of eggs available in markets.

Following the concerns, the Minister for Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs had directed the concerned department to investigate the matter and submit a report.

Subsequently, the company whose brand was named in the viral video had maintained that its eggs were safe for consumption and complied with all FSSAI norms, attributing any trace findings to possible environmental factors rather than antibiotic usage. (JKNS)
