Jammu, Jan 2 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Police have initiated a preliminary enquiry after a video surfaced on social media showing a cricketer from Pulwama playing a cricket match in Jammu while displaying a Palestine logo on his helmet, officials said on Friday.

The move comes after a Palestinian flag was seen being displayed on the helmet during a match played in Jammu.

A police spokesperson, in a statement issued here to news agency JKNS, said that the video shows a cricket player, identified as Furqan Ul Haq, son of Tajamul Hussain Bhat, resident of Tangipuna, Pulwama, playing cricket at KC Door, Muthi.

Considering the sensitivity of the matter and its potential public order implications, police have initiated a 14-day preliminary enquiry under Section 173(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) at Police Station Domana to ascertain the facts of the incident.

“The enquiry will examine the intent and background of the individual and any possible linkages,” the statement said, adding that further action, if any, will be taken based on the outcome of the enquiry, reads the statement issued by Jammu Police.

On Wednesday, during a match between JK11 Kings and Jammu Trailblazers in the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Champions League cricket tournament, player Furqan was seen batting while wearing a helmet with the Palestine logo.

Soon after the video went viral, Jammu and Kashmir Police summoned the player and the organiser of the tournament. By questioning the cricketer and the organiser, the police are trying to determine whether the necessary permissions were obtained or not.
