Srinagar, Jan 1 (JKNS): The extension of the Vande Bharat Express to Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as more than a major rail connectivity achievement, turning into a unique cultural journey that blends speed with heritage.

Running between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, the semi-high-speed train is offering passengers a taste of regional identity through carefully curated onboard cuisine that changes with the direction of travel.

Officials said that as the train crosses the Pir Panjal range, it symbolically bridges two cultural zones of the Union Territory. From Katra to Srinagar, passengers are served traditional Dogri dishes reflecting the food culture of the Jammu region, including rajma, haak saag, kadam and paneer-based preparations. These dishes highlight the simplicity and warmth of Duggar cuisine.

On the return journey from Srinagar to Katra, the menu shifts to Kashmiri flavours, showcasing the Valley’s rich culinary heritage. Dishes such as Kashmiri pulao, zeera aloo, haak paneer and kesar phirni, inspired by Persian and Central Asian influences, are served to passengers, giving them a glimpse of the famed Kashmiri food tradition.

Railway officials described the initiative as a symbol of national integration, noting that food has been used as a medium to connect cultures. They said the move promotes cultural exchange, supports local produce and traditions, and helps passengers emotionally connect with the regions they travel through.

With snow-clad mountains outside and kahwa inside, the Kashmir Vande Bharat Express is redefining travel by combining modern infrastructure with cultural storytelling, making every journey a celebration of unity in diversity. (JKNS)
