Srinagar, Dec 8 (JKNS): A fresh wave of freezing conditions tightened its hold over the Valley on Sunday night, with most regions of Kashmir slipping back into sub-zero temperatures.
Shopian remained the coldest spot, registering a bone-chilling –4.2°C.
As per the updated figures shared by independent weather channel Kashmir Weather as per news agency JKNS, a significant drop was witnessed across central, south, and north Kashmir.
In Srinagar, the minimum temperature dropped to –2.4°C, while the airport vicinity was even colder at –3.2°C. Pampore settled at –2.0°C, Budgam at –3.1°C, and Ganderbal at –2.3°C — indicating widespread frost across the region.
South Kashmir also remained firmly in the grip of the cold. Anantnag and Awantipora each recorded –1.4°C, Pulwama hit –3.1°C, and the tourist destination Pahalgam touched –0.4°C. Kokernag was one of the few locations to remain just above freezing at 0.1°C.
In north Kashmir, the chill continued to deepen as Kupwara recorded –1.2°C, Bandipora –2.2°C, and Baramulla –3.1°C. Sonamarg, still under cold wave conditions, registered –2.8°C.
Meanwhile, temperatures across the Jammu belt stayed comparatively milder but still showed a downward trend. Jammu city stood at 7.9°C, Katra at 9.6°C, Banihal at 4.5°C, Bhaderwah at 2.6°C, and Udhampur at 2.0°C.
The cold was far more intense in Ladakh, where Leh dipped to –6.2°C, Kargil to –5.0°C, and Nubra Valley to –3.7°C — keeping the high-altitude region under severe cold wave conditions.
Meteorologists say the prevailing weather pattern is likely to continue, with clear night skies expected to trigger a further fall in temperatures in the coming days. (JKNS)
