Winter Session Begins: Jammu Offices Reopen as NC Government Restores ‘Darbar Move’ After Four Years

Jammu, Nov 3 (JKNS): Government offices in Jammu resumed operations on Monday as the National Conference-led government reinstated the biannual ‘Durbar Move’, shifting the civil secretariat and associated departments from Srinagar for the winter session after a four-year gap.

According to news agency JKNS, comprehensive arrangements have been made to ensure smooth functioning, including enhanced security, accommodation, and transport facilities for employees relocating from Srinagar. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah traveled by road along with most employees to attend offices in Jammu, marking the commencement of the first winter session under the restored tradition.

The ‘Durbar Move’, introduced nearly 150 years ago by Dogra rulers, had been suspended in 2021 by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, citing the administration’s transition to e-office, which was expected to save around Rs 200 crore annually. Fulfilling an election promise, CM Omar Abdullah announced the revival of the practice on October 16, a decision widely welcomed by the Jammu business community.

Ahead of the transition, Jammu city underwent significant preparations, including the repair of roads damaged during heavy rains in August-September, maintenance of government offices, and readiness of staff quarters to facilitate a smooth reopening and ensure seamless administrative operations for the winter session.
