Sangam Crosses Flood Alert; CM Omar Chairs Emergency Meet

Srinagar, Sep 03 (JKNS): The Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FC), Kashmir, on Wednesday reported rising water levels across major rivers and tributaries, with Sangam crossing the flood alert mark.

Officials said continuous rainfall has also forced the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).

According to the river Jhelum levels at 12:00 noon, as per the news agency JKNS: Sangam – 23.88 ft (Alert: 21–25 ft); Pampore – 4.43 m (Alert: 4.5–5.0 m); Munshi Bagh – 15.99 ft (Alert: 18–21 ft); Asham – 8.33 ft (Alert: 14–16.5 ft); and Wullar – 1576.55 m (Full Reservoir Level: 1578 m).

Tributary levels included: Vishow Nallah, Khudwani – Overflow (Alert: 7.75–8.50 m); Rambiyara Nallah, Wachi – 3.80 m (Alert: 5.4–5.7 m); Lidder Nallah, Batkoot – 1.59 m (Alert: 1.5–1.65 m); and Sindh Nallah, Doderhama – 3.42 m (Alert: 3.65–3.9 m).

Meanwhile, the traffic update states that NH-44 remains closed for vehicular movement. Travelers are advised not to undertake journeys until the weather improves and restoration work is completed. Official updates are available on Traffic Police Twitter, Facebook, and TCUs.

CM’s Review: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired an emergency meeting, directing authorities to: intensify ground response and relief operations; ensure clearance of waterlogged areas and safeguard essential services; and carry out timely evacuations in critical zones.

Briefings were provided by Ministers Javed Rana and Satish Sharma and Minister Saki Naito and Advisor Nasir Sogami. The CM urged the public to follow advisories, avoid vulnerable spots, and stay safe.

Additionally, authorities have deployed emergency teams and sandbags at flood-prone locations and continue monitoring river levels across the valley.—(JKNS)
