Baramulla, Aug 22 (JKNS): In the village of Kalantra Wagoora area of district Baramulla, known for its trout fish farms, a young brother-sister duo has turned government support into a story of success and inspiration.

Heena Ahad, 23, daughter of Ab Ahad Mir and a B.Sc graduate, established her trout fish farm in 2023–24 under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).

With family support, she produced nearly 4,000 trout in the first year, selling around 50 percent and earning profits she described as “satisfying.” Her six-member family has stood firmly behind her initiative, making the venture a success.

Her brother, Rouf Ahmad, from Kalantra Kreeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, also set up his own trout farm during the same period. Like his sister, he attributes his success to timely guidance and support from the Fisheries Department. “They guided us at every step, and today we are satisfied with the results,” Rouf said.

Speaking to JKNS, both Heena and Rouf said that the availability of natural water resources in their area has boosted their livelihood and brought happiness to their families. “Our income has increased, and our family members are equally happy,” they said.

Sending out a message to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, they appealed: “Stay away from drugs, take benefit of HADP, and remember — business can be more rewarding than just waiting for a government job.”

Assistant Director Fisheries Baramulla, Showkat Ahmad, told JKNS, “Our aim is to provide employment opportunities to the youth. We try our best, and whether it is boys or girls, anyone who seeks support will always find us ready to help.” (JKNS)
