Threads of Protection, Threads of Peace: ‘Raksha-Bandhan’ in the Heart of Kashmir

Threads of Protection, Threads of Peace: ‘Raksha-Bandhan’ in the Heart of Kashmir

As dawn breaks over the Zabarwan hills and the first light kisses the Dal Lake, Kashmir awakens—not just to a new day, but to a new possibility. The sun rises like a prayer, casting golden threads across water and stone, whispering: Today, we choose love. Today, we choose each other.

Raksha Bandhan arrives in this tender hour—not merely as a festival, but as a sacred pause. Across India, sisters tie threads on their brothers’ wrists, invoking a timeless vow: I trust you to protect me. But in Kashmir, this vow deepens. It becomes a promise between shrines and soldiers, between elders and youth, between stories long silenced and futures waiting to be born.

  • Shrines as Sentinels of Harmony:

Hazratbal and Shankaracharya Temple—two sacred sites, two faiths, one Valley. Hazratbal cradles the relic of the Prophet, while Shankaracharya chants the hymns of Shiva from its hilltop perch. Between them flows the Dal Lake, shimmering like a sacred thread that binds the Valley’s soul.

Imagine a rakhi tied between these two guardians. A thread of reverence, not rivalry. A vow that says: “Your faith enriches mine. Your story is safe with me.”

In that moment, Kashmir becomes not just a place, but a promise.

  • Children and Soldiers: Threads Across Borders:

The festival of Raksha Bandhan is, at its heart, a symbol of emotional solidarity, affection, and gratitude. And nowhere is this more tenderly expressed than in the gestures of Kashmir’s youngest hearts.

In Doda district, over 3,000 handmade rakhis were sent by schoolchildren to soldiers posted in Ladakh. Each rakhi carried creativity, patriotism, and heartfelt emotion—transforming a symbolic gesture into a living bond. This initiative, part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, was reported by Times Now News on August 7, 2025.

Picture it:

A child, barely tall enough to reach a soldier’s wrist, ties a rakhi with trembling fingers.

The soldier bends down—not just to receive the thread, but to receive the trust.

No words are spoken, but everything is understood.

“You guard our borders. We guard your heart.”

  • Youth as Weavers of Peace:

Kashmir’s youth is bright, resilient, and rooted; they are also the true architects of this new dawn.

Let them lead interfaith rakhi drives in schools and colleges.

Let them craft rakhis from saffron threads, walnut wood beads, and pashmina strands.

Let them write messages like: “I tie this not just on your wrist, but on our shared future.”

Let every ‘Rakhi’ tied be a pledge:

  • To protect each other’s dignity
  • To listen before judging
  • To dream together, not apart

Because when youth become weavers of peace, every thread becomes a bridge.

  • When Threads Become Rituals

A thread of unity is what ties the chords of the heart. And when this thread becomes a ritual, not just once a year, but every day—then religion ceases to divide. Instead, it becomes a mosaic of coexistence.

Love replaces suspicion. Empathy replaces fear. Togetherness replaces isolation.

Raksha Bandhan, then, is not just about siblings. It’s about citizens. About shrines and soldiers. About every Kashmiri who proudly says:

“I will protect your story as I protect mine. I will guard your dreams as I guard my own.”

Because peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the presence of care.

And every sunrise over Kashmir is a reminder: We are still capable of choosing love.

Hence, this Raksha-Bandhan, let Kashmir’s youth rise not just as recipients of protection, but as everyday Rakshaks aka The Guardians of Trust, Dignity, and Shared Humanity.

While the Army and police safeguard our borders, it is we who must shield our society from within. By pledging to protect our neighbours—regardless of religion, background, or belief—we weave a living bandhan, a chain of care that fortifies our streets, our schools, our hearts.

Let this be the moment we redefine ‘Raksha Bandhan’ not just as a ritual, but as a civic vow: to stand for each other, to build a hive of harmony, and to ensure that Kashmir’s true strength flows from its people, united in purpose and protected in spirit.
