New Delhi :All India Kashmiri Samaj (AIKS) has urged Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood to reject the release petition of Santosh Kumar Singh, convicted for the rape and murder of Priyadarshini Mattoo. AIKS has written a strongly worded letter highlighting that Singh’s release would set a dangerous precedent for heinous crimes like rape and murder.
The petition is currently pending before the Sentence Review Board, chaired by the state Home Minister. AIKS President Ravinder Pandita said,
“We raise strong objections to the review that was rejected earlier also. The release of Santosh Kumar Singh would send a chilling signal across India.”
Santosh Kumar Singh was sentenced in 2006 by Delhi High Court after national uproar over the brutal crime. As per Delhi Sentencing Remission Policy 2004, a minimum of 14 years of actual imprisonment is mandatory for life convicts whose death sentences are commuted.
Earlier, several other socio-political organisations had also submitted similar memorandums to the minister opposing Singh’s release.
