Pulwama: Few farmers in a village in Pulwama district have illegally constructed a road over irrigation channels blocking the water to paddy and agricultural land. This startling development has occurred without no objection certification from the Irrigation Department.

Residents in Naroo village of the district said that some locals in connivance with the Rural Development Department filled the irrigation channel under MGREGA funds and destroyed the water network to agriculture land.

The locals said the irrigation division Pulwama was kept in the dark, and neither the RDD nor the farmers with vested interests obtained No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Irrigation officials.

They said the channel which irrigated agricultural land for decades is now completely blocked even as residents have complained about it to the Irrigation department, but no credible action has been taken in the grave matter.

They said some farmers with vested interests have misled the RDD by constructing a road to convert the paddy land into commercial land later.

The locals have demanded that the traditional irrigation channel whose width was 30 feet as per the official records must be restored so that the agricultural land is saved from conversion into commercial use.
