Srinagar, July 7 (JKNS): A short yet intense rainfall on Monday evening wreaked havoc across Srinagar’s Old City, triggering massive waterlogging in several residential areas and leaving locals fuming over repeated drainage failures.

Reports received by JKNS said localities including Aqilmir Khanyar, Rajouri Kadal, Bohri Kadal, Sakidafar, Chatabal, Nawakadal, and parts of Airport Road were inundated within minutes, as rainwater entered homes, shops, and lanes.

Residents described the situation as unbearable, citing years of official negligence and temporary fixes.

“This can’t go on every year. One hour of rain and we’re drowning. The government must provide a one-time permanent drainage solution,” said Farooq Ahmad, a resident of Aqilmir Khanyar

“What’s the point of cosmetic repairs? We need a proper citywide plan to overhaul this crumbling system,” said Riyaz Dar, a trader from Bohri Kadal.

Stagnant water also disrupted traffic and pedestrian movement late into the evening, with locals using makeshift tools to drain flooded alleyways.

“The administration including Omar Abdullah led government must intervene immediately and stop making excuses. People are suffering and businesses are hurting,” said Amina Bano from Chattabal told over phone.

Residents urged Omar Abdullah Led Government and Srinagar Municipal Corporation to swing into action and initiate long-term measures to ensure Srinagar is no longer paralysed by a passing shower. (JKNS)
