Pulwama: Member legislative assembly Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra urged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister’s immediate intervention as major canal collapse near Waghama, Bijbehara Sangam has triggered panic among thousands of farmers across south Kashmir, cutting off the vital Awantipora canal that irrigates more than 5,000 hectares of paddy fields from Pahalgam to Pulwama.
In a post on X, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Pulwama, Waheed Ur Rehman Para, as per news agency JKNS, raised alarm over the collapse and appealed for immediate government intervention seeks swift action to prevent a looming agricultural crisis.
Awantipora canal from Pahalgam to Pulwama irrigates 5,000 hectares of paddy cultivation and is a lifeline for farmers. However, it is currently cut off due to a canal collapse at Waghama, Bijbehara Sangam. This urgent issue requires immediate repair to prevent drought-like conditions. Farmers across Bijbehara, Awantipora, Kakapora, and Tral areas have expressed deep distress, urging authorities to deploy resources immediately to restore the canal. Many said their paddy nurseries are already drying due to lack of water. (JKNS)
