Srinagar, June 5, 2025: The Department of Environmental Science, S.P. College, M.A. Road Srinagar, celebrated World Environment Day 2025 on June 5 at the college auditorium. This year’s theme, “End Plastic Pollution,” took center stage as students and faculty gathered to raise awareness about the growing threat of plastic waste, especially its impact on aquatic ecosystems.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Parvaiz Ahmad, Head of the Department of Environmental Science, who spoke on the local and regional impacts of plastic pollution. He urged students to actively engage in eco-friendly practices to help reduce plastic waste.

Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, Principal of S.P. College, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and pledged to foster a zero-waste culture within the college premises.

A keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Suhaib Ahmad Bandh, Assistant Professor in the Department, who elaborated on the journey of plastic from a “material of the future” to a global environmental disaster. He also highlighted the United Nations’ role in combating plastic pollution on a global scale.

The event featured student presentations and a quiz competition on plastic pollution. P.G. Environmental Science 2nd semester students emerged as top performers, winning accolades in both segments. Amaani Noor bagged the first prize in presentations, while Toiba Naseer and Mehboob Ali clinched the first position in the quiz competition.

The celebration concluded with a valedictory session, where the Principal distributed certificates and awards among the participants and winners, appreciating their efforts toward spreading environmental awareness.
